As seen in https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wYf_vvX2sNM It's a tilt sensor. Simple, crude, but very effective. I use this to turn on garden lights, as unlike infrared it isn't set off by the local foxes and cats. Requires one metal pendulum and some wire.
