Titans of CNC Christmas Ornament

Christmas may be behind us, but that just means that it is time to start preparing for next year. If you are like me, and you have a 3D printer that is a little on the slow side, it might be necessary to get a jump on the season in order to make sure the tree is properly decorated. For your consideration, my first Christmas ornament designed in Fusion 360. Ditch those boring metallic globes for this rockin' redesign.This ornament was made for the Titans of CNC: Academy Christmas ornament contest. The Academy is run by Titan Ty Gilroy and is dedicated to empowering people through manufacturing education, specifically CNC machining. The Fusion 360 tutorials are pretty great. You can find them at https://academy.titansofcnc.com/. The body of the ornament is a lattice made from a tilted ring in a circular pattern. The stars on the body are modeled after end mills as a way of highlighting the group's manufacturing vision. The eagle is the group's logo. It is the logo of Titan's shop as well as that of the Academy. It represents the drive of the group to rise to greatness. This was my first major project in Fusion 360. It put my little laptop through its paces, but in the end I was pleased with the result. The most challenging part was figuring out how to model the end mills. Splines to the rescue!My dream is to manufacture this ornament using powder bed laser fusion. In the meantime I will settle for my little FDM machine. It would perform well on the Stratasys Objet line, which would make quick work of the delicate features and fine details in its rigid opaque material. The Objet Connex3 could color the model as it prints, saving painting time and making an ornament worthy of a place of honor on even the most discerning Christmas tree.
