Chess is a two-player strategy board game between Black and White players from the distinctive colors of their moved pieces. It's played on a checkered gameboard consisting of 64 alternating squares, with 32 pieces starting the game: 16 each color - a king, a queen, two rooks, two knights, two bishops, and eight pawns. The objective is to put the opponent's king in a precarious position, threatening its capture. Chess is widely enjoyed globally and can be played at home, in clubs dedicated to chess, online, or by mail at both amateur and professional levels. As a sport, chess is recognized internationally by the International Olympic Committee.
