Traditional Irish Flute in D

Traditional Irish Flute in D

This is a playable traditional Irish flute I made from measurements from a real wooden flute. In the design each section which joins another has three holes that are designed to have a 1cm of filament inserted into. This helps when gluing sections together by keeping the alignment right. I have made a flute without this addition and it can be quite finicky to glue together whereas putting in the filament rods makes it a foolproof process. I have printed this in PLA and found it did play across the 1st and 2nd octave, I am simply not good enough on a flute to judge it more than that. Though I found the sound quite pleasing and reasonably loud. I recommend after each printing sanding or filing each section until it has a smooth interior before gluing each section together, if the interior is too rough then it can be difficult to sound out the lower octave. If printing with ABS I would attempt vapor smoothing if you are setup to do it. I have not done this though as I don't have a setup for it yet. In the print shown I tried an experimental weathered wood finish on brown PLA, not entirely successfully. I printed this in PLA without support. Here are public links to design files to make any changes. I had always wanted an Irish flute and this was a good chance to get one.
