Trinacria: the symbol of Sicily The symbol of the Trinacria or Triscele is very ancient, or at least, the three legs bent and giving the sensation of a perpetual movement. In Sicily, the Triscele happens to become Trinacria, for there are three main promontories or mountains of Sicily, at their three points, forming a triangle. In Greek τρία (tría, three) and ἄκρα (akra) means "the three mountains", Messina, Palermo and Noto, at the three respective points. The name Trinakria refers par excellence to Sicily, although the symbol is older and can be seen on various Hellenic coins of antiquity. In the center, the head of Medusa, Gorgon of Greek mythology, with serpent hair.
