TL;DR: This is an old version! you can find the current version here. Keyring and Plaque are great too, definitely check them out. Update: This thing has been replaced by a new and improved version! Hooray! That's right folks, I finally got around to my future plans! This time, I re-designed it from scratch in openSCAD, a program that's actually parametric, which was way easier to do than I had expected. I totally should have done that earlier. You're still welcome to print this one out, it is still pretty cool, but the new one has fancy stuff like real gear geometry and computer-generated text and multiple variations and even Customizer (woot woot!), so you should definitely check that one out first! Also, due to the update, this thing is no longer a work in progress! You're welcome to anyone viewing this after 2020. Edit: Customizer is currently not working properly in the new version, and I have no clue how to fix it. If you think you might know how, please don't hesitate to message me! This was remixed from lamiskin's Keyring - Trust Me I Am An Engineer, which itself is a remix of JoshKonstantinos's Engineer Plaque, both of them are fantastic, and I couldn't have possibly made this without all the work they put into their versions, so you should definitely go check them out before you print this. I really liked the Keyring version, but it's quite thick, and I like to be conservative with my filament. I scaled it down a bit, but the beveled edges just don't scale well, and that combined with my sub-par slicer to give me a very poor quality print. That's when I decided to remix it. Here's what I did: I scaled it down to roughly (very roughly) the size of a credit card. It's definitely smaller than a credit card, but it gives you a rough idea. I scaled the height down to 4mm. I've had a lot of luck with this height on other projects, so I thought it would work well here. I removed the back side gears and lettering. I'm sure you put a lot of work into putting it there, lamiskin, but my slicer can't handle oddly shaped bridges, so I had to get rid of it. (I may yet try to make a version like mine, but with both sides) I redesigned the hole. I never liked the not-quite-circular hole in the Keyring design, so I swapped it for a round hole. (It came out a bit smaller than I intended, I may redesign that again) I rounded the edges and corners, including the inside of the hole. Bevels don't work very well at this size unless you have an extremely precise printer. Rounds actually come out pretty bad too, if you want them to be perfect, but I don't. Once again, don't expect it to be a perfectly circular arc; it won't be. It will, however, be rounded just enough that it doesn't feel sharp, and I think it makes it look really nice too. Here are my future plans for this thing, all of which can be found in the new version! (once I upload it): As I mentioned above, I would like to make another version that restores lamiskin's double-sided-ness. My slicer won't be able to handle it, but that doesn't mean yours can't. Also as I mentioned above, I would like to re-redesign the hole to make it larger and slightly closer to the outside. I would like to completely redo the text. It appears as if JoshKonstantinos's original design used hand-made 3D text, and if I can figure out how to replace that with computer-generated 3D text, then I think it would look even sharper. Print Settings Printer: daVinci 1.0 Pro Resolution: .3mm Infill: 10%, honeycomb Notes: It may seem a bit counter-intuitive, but do not print this with supports. See the fifth bullet under Here's what I did in the summary above for an explanation. If you plan to use this as an actual key-chain (I don't), you may want to increase the wall thickness and/or the infill percentage, and of course ABS will be more durable than PLA. Mine seems quite sturdy, but it hasn't been abused by everyday use on a keychain. If you plan to scale this up at all, first I recommend that you check out lamiskin's Keyring - Trust Me I Am An Engineer and JoshKonstantinos's Engineer Plaque, they may do the trick a little better. If you still want to print mine scaled up, you may want to consider using supports, as the edge rounding likely won't print well if it's much larger.
