The Tupolev Tu-22M, also known as the Backfire by NATO, is a supersonic variable-sweep wing bomber developed by Tupolev's design team. Some sources suggest it was initially called the Tu-26. During the Cold War, Soviet Air Force pilots used this bomber for strategic missions, while naval aviators flew it from Soviet warships to attack enemy shipping at long range. As of 2014, over a hundred Tu-22Ms remain in service with Russia's air force, continuing their vital role in military operations.
