Electromagnet Bearing + Turbocharger: A turbo charger combined with an electromagnetic bearing. The shaft of the turbocharger is support by the magnetic field generated by the electromagnetic bearing. The electromagnet is powered by the alternator of the vehicle. Electromagnetic bearings offer the following benefits: - Lower energy consumption - Higher reliability - No bearing component wear thus longer service life - Virtually maintenance free - Smaller footprint. Turbochargers offer the following benefits: - Adds compression to engine cylinders in higher RPM ranges (increases power output of engine) http://www.howstuffworks.com/turbo.htm The novel part of this invention: The vehicle’s ECU controls the electric field of the electromagnetic bearing. At lower RPMs the magnetic field is manipulated so that it applies a force on the shaft of the turbine to pre-spool the turbocharger thus eliminating turbo lag. This design will require current from the alternator so as long as the vehicle is running, and the alternator is sized properly for the application, the power necessary to pre-spool the turbo will be available.
