Two Spheres in Orbit

Hepworth was one of the foremost British sculptors of the 20h century. Her abstract sculptures influenced artists worldwide. She preferred geometrical shapes and smooth surfaces. This late sculpture is an example of the purity and simplicity found in her work, and of her interest in paired forms. Hepworth spent much of her career in St. Ives, Cornwall, amongst a group of artists inspired by nature. The title for this work is perhaps a reference to the recent moon landings and to the 'exploration of space' - she explored physical space through her sculpture.
