Unified MagBall Effector & Extruder DON'T PURCHASE UMBEE METAL PARTS FROM SHAPEWAYS UNTIL THIS MESSAGE IS REMOVED. WE ARE HAVING A BALL BEARING SOURCING ISSUE. This design combines a 3D printer extruder, DeltaBot effector, and MagBall arm attachments into a compact direct drive print system capable of handling most solid and elastomeric filaments. At the core of the extruder is the powerful PG35L-048 geared stepper motor, MK8 style drive gear and spring loaded idler pinch bearing. On the top end are MagBall mounts for quick magnetic zero backlash attachment of carriage arms. On the bottom end is the popular E3D v6 or Lite6 hot end. This compact extruder that can print NinjaFlex, TPU, and other high temp exotic filaments. If there is enough demand, we will bundle components into a kit. A lot of time was invested in this design. Light Dremel grinding will be necessary with the GEN1 metal parts for a tight fit of the E3D grove mount. GEN2 does not need grinding. NOTE: the most up to date files are located www.GitHub.com/UltiBots/UMBEE History Our early DeltaBot printers had Bowden style extruders. This common extruder was unable to reliably print filaments like NinjaFlex. We decided to try our Micro Extruder design with our DeltaBot alpha printers and the results were impressive. So much so, we decided to incorporate the Micro Extruder design into our V-Slot based Delta printer. Credit to Nick Foley for pioneering with metal parts from Shapeways and our PG35L-048 geared stepper motor. Without his efforts this adaptation would not exist. GEN1 update... Got the metal parts back from Shapeways... WOW! The tolerances, edges, finish is so nice. The UMBEE (Unified MagBall Extruder & Effector) needed very minor grinding and fit together. First test print exceeded all expectations. Below are phone quality pictures. The UMBEE had no problem moving at 119mm/sec (see calcs below) and the print result is outstanding. GEN2 Update... Initial assembly is AWESOME. The groove mount on the v6 heatsink fit snug without modification (no grinding). The retainer arm shaft hole is 0.5mm too long has been adjusted. Improvements will widen the body filament feed protrusion to allow for a 2mm recess in the underside. This will allow ≈ 2mm of PTFE tube to seat in the recess when fed from below and retained once the heat break is installed. The GEN3 body and retainer with accessory mounts has been ordered. Will report back late December. The single wall cylinder above was printed at 119mm/sec based on quick calculation of video frames. Using Premier Pro, we determined there were 396 frames for 10 revolutions. 396 frames for 10 revolutions @ 30 frames/sec = 13.2 seconds. 13.2 / 10 = 1.32 seconds per revolution. The diameter is 50mm = 157mm circumference. 157 / 1.32 = 119mm/sec. Overall, ecstatic with the results. For a GEN1 prototype, the parts are OK! For GEN2 will be adjusting the distance between MagBalls (from 45mm to 43mm), the E3D groove for improved fit and moving the bearing holder in by 1mm to minimize the gap between drive shaft bearing and retainer.
