A universal joint, also referred to as a universal coupling, U-joint, Cardan joint, Hardy-Spicer joint or Hooke's joint, is found in rigid rods that facilitate 'bending' in any direction. It is commonly seen in shafts transmitting rotary motion, and comprises of two hinges positioned near each other but oriented at 90° to one another, connected via a cross shaft.
