Designing a universal joint using SolidWorks requires precision and attention to detail. To begin, create a new part in SolidWorks by selecting "Part" from the start page or clicking on the "Part" button in the toolbar. In the part mode, select "New Part" and choose a suitable template for your universal joint. Once you have created a new part, switch to the sketch mode by clicking on the "Sketch" tab at the top of the SolidWorks window. Draw an oval shape with the dimensions of 10mm x 20mm as the center shaft of the universal joint. To draw the oval, select the "Circle" tool and then click on the "Modify" button to change it into an ellipse. Next, draw four lines that radiate from the center of the oval at equal angles (90 degrees apart) to create the first set of journals. Use the "Line" tool to draw these lines and make sure they are tangent to the oval shape. You can use the "Smart Dimension" tool to dimension these lines. Now, draw two more sets of journals on either side of the center shaft by duplicating the first set of journals using the "Copy" feature in SolidWorks. These sets should be located at a distance of 10mm from the center shaft and have the same dimensions as the first set. After drawing all the journals, switch to the part mode and use the "Boss Extrude" feature to create the outer shell of the universal joint. Use the "Revolve" tool to extrude the shape along the axis of rotation. Make sure to select the correct orientation for the revolved part by using the "Reference Plane" tool. Finally, add a hole at the center of the universal joint to accommodate the shaft that connects it to another component. Use the "Hole" feature in SolidWorks to create this hole. With these steps, you have successfully designed a universal joint using SolidWorks.
