Universal RIC & ASTM Recycling Symbols

Included are two different design patterns for the RIC (Resin Identification Codes) recycling codes. One is the universally adopted code pattern, and the other is the ASTM D7611-13 (Option B) pattern.

The main purpose of these symbols should be to include them in your designs by means of boolean operations (i.e. combining them or subtracting them from your model). Or to be more clear - put them on the surface, or carve them into the surface.

The reason for this is simple. Sooner or later our prints will land in the trash, and even if you are planning on recycling them, it will be impossible for the recycling facility to sort them correctly without the standardised RIC symbols. This means that even with good intentions, they will most likely be burned or end up in a landfill.

Since PLA falls under code 07 "Other" I made two versions. One with only "07" and "O", and one which follows the ABS and PA methodology and combines both versions.

I did this, because PLA is probably the most used 3D printing material. I wanted to make sure that it is possible for the person or machine handling the waste products, to recognise it as PLA. In hopes that it will not end up in a landfill or waste incinerator, due to it not being distinguishable from other plastics under code 07.

The width of each icon is 10 mm, with a height of 1 mm. They can of course be modified and adapted.

Since ASTM D7611-13 is intended to be a modernised version of the well known "circular arrow" RIC design, it is more future proof to use this design pattern. It is also easier to print, since it has less details.

If you want to read more about the intentions behind modernising the existing RIC design pattern, you can find more information here:
https://sn.astm.org/?q=features/modernizing-resin-identification-code-ja13.html
