Each year, approximately 15 million people worldwide have a stroke. Of these stroke victims, 23% are permanently disabled and will experience problems with arm movements. Stroke causes a damage of cortical tissue and results in disturbed generation and integration of neural commands. Intense physical therapy can help regain some of the normal functional arm movements. The main objective of the project is to design an exoskeleton hand structure which allows the movement in every possible direction as of a human hand.By this model, we are trying to achieve all degrees of freedom provided by the human hand. The human hand has 3 rotational degrees of freedom at the shoulder, 2 rotational degrees of freedom at elbow and 2 at the wrist. The third rotational degree of freedom at shoulder about the axis of hand is hardly used and can be achieved by one of the degrees of freedom at the elbow.
