Using Logic in Harry Potter

Students are given a riddle from Harry Potter. The solution was not given in the book. To solve this riddle, students will need to first create 7 bottles. They can then use the clues to figure out what order the bottles go in. Print Settings Printer Brand: MakerBot Printer: MakerBot Replicator Rafts: Yes Supports: No Resolution: standard Infill: 10% How I Designed This I used the Makerbot PrintShop app. One of the options is to design your own vase. I designed 7 different size vases to look like bottles. I reduced the size to 25% to print. You may want slightly larger bottles. Please note that this app is only available for the iPad. Another option would be for students to design bottles using a different software. Overview and Background Students will get practice problem solving and using logic. Objectives: Students will develop their logic skills, which is an important part of mathematical proofs, including geometry proofs. Skills Learned (Standards): CCSS.Math.Practice.MP1 Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. Lesson Plan and Activity Students can work in groups. On the worksheet they are given some background and the riddle that appeared in Harry Potter. Then they are asked to design and print 7 bottles, all of different sizes. I used the Makerbot PrintShop app because the design is very easy. If you don’t have access to iPods you can also use other software, it will just take longer to design the bottles. Each group member can design one or two bottles, depending on the size of the group. Those will take a while to print so you can resume this activity the following day. The next day students will try to set up their bottles so that there is only one possible solution to this riddle. Then they will label each bottle and trade with another group to solve theirs. In the solution worksheet I gave one possible answer. Duration of Lesson This activity will probably need to be done over two days. The first day would be to introduce the riddle and to design the bottles. They would probably need to be printed overnight. This won’t take the full class. (Perhaps also do the fox, goose, and a bag of beans activity http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1696602). The second day students can solve the riddle. Preparation Students don’t need any background knowledge to do this activity. Rubric and Assessment This activity can be done without an assessment or can count for a participation grade. Question (points) Participation in designing bottles (3) Participation in setting up bottles (7) Participation in solving the riddle (5) Total 15
