The ornate monumental vase was one of the many sculpted works that decorated the park in Versailles during the reign of King Louis XIV (1643-1715); it was placed in the North parterre. The vase is decorated with a marine triumph, the scene shows the sea Nymph Galatea, who was in love with the Shepherd Acis according to the “Metamorphosis” written by the Roman poet Ovidio.
