Posted are STL files from a laser scan of orginal Vickers Viscount 700 Series aircraft reading lamps. These files can be used to create a complete and EXACT replica of the reading lamps. I have a Sideshow Collectables Life Sized R2-D2 that has broken lamps after it's first trip to Makerfaire. I used a Makerbot Replicator 2 to prototype a set of replacement lamps. I'm now having a set of replicas made out of original materials and using orginal manufacturing process fabricated to replace the damaged lamps. Enjoy! Instructions This thing is based on a set of 3 original Vickers Viscount Reading Lamps that I purchased many years ago from John Sherrill. John spent months finding a batch of them at an aerospace surplus yard. I disassembled one of the lamps which, unfortunately, resulted in some damage to the grasp and to the lens . It is not easy to take something apart for the first time when you have no idea how it was put together.) Two reading lamps were sent out to be laser scanned. One lamp was the dissassembled lamp to scan each individual piece. One lamp remained assembled in order to capture how the parts fit together. The scan mesh was put through a geometric solver in order to reverse engineer critical sections back into canonical geometry . The solver iterates through thousands of combinations to find the solution with the least amount of average deviation from the scanned mesh. The reesults were convert into CATIA V5 and modeled as solid geometry. The orginal delivered solid geometry did not include the threads on the grasps, threads, or lens seat. The files have been updated temporarily with 20TPI 1-5/8 UN threads while research continures into the exact thread pattern. Some users report success by printing the threaded parts at 98% in order to compensate for the resolution of their printer. I cleaned up the threads using a tap and die when printing on my original Makerbot Replicator. No clean up was necessary when printing in Frosted Ultra Detail or Frosted Extreme Detail from Shapeways.
