Voluntary Opening Terminal Device – general purposeThe Terminal Device is designed for manufacture using 3D printing - there is no need for any support material or structures as every single feature is fully self supporting by design. The tension of the cables is holding the fingers in the palm. There is an intentional gap between fingers and the palm for two reasons:1. to accommodate the tolerances of even the roughest 3D printers2. to let the grasp adjust to the shape of the object which is being grasped (the fingers are free to turn few degrees left or right around their axes)The 3 finger configuration consists of 4 parts (3 fingers and the palm). It prints in 7 hours and uses 60 grams of ABS filament. The 5 finger configuration consists of 6 parts (5 fingers and the palm). It prints in 9 hours and uses 96 grams of ABS filament.Turnigy Fabrikator 3D Printer (FDM) was used for prototyping and to check the time it takes to print. Its nozzle diameter is 0.4mm and filament diameter: 1.75mm. Please see the screenshots of the slicing settings to reproduce the parts. The 12 oz (355ml) cans were used while working on this design, it turned out to be very hard to find them in UK as the standard size of cans is 11.2 oz (330 ml) here.
