This is an adapter plate to retrofit a single DIN sized head unit into a vintage aircooled VW with dash trim. When I got my '74 Type 1 a couple years ago it came with a hacked up dash with a CD player shoved in it. I could have welded in a new OEM sized radio plate but since the dash was already cut I decdied to stick with a DIN sized radio. If the dash was not cut I would leave a factory radio in place and put a modern radio in the glovebox.

I designed this adapter to screw to the dash with M3 rivnuts and socket head screws (just using screws and a nut/washer from behind would work too). The screws go through triangular decorative center line trim that should closely match the existing dash trim on vintage cars. Mine is a '74 but I added the trim from some parts I got at swap meets.

The DIN cage then slides into the adapter and is affixed by folding over the metal tabs and then the radio head unit just snaps into the DIN cage. Its a very easy install and looks much better than the hacked up gaping hole. The only trick is to spend your time making sure the hole in the dash is sized correctly and level (Dremel rotary tool FTW).

I printed this in ABS to get the best heat-resistance I could but ASA/Nylon/PC/etc. would be fine as well. PETG might also work but I'd be afraid of it warping over time depending on your climate.
