Wax Seal, Melrose Abbey

Wax Seal, Melrose Abbey

sketchfab

This red wax seal was once attached to a 16th century document. Seals like this were used to show that a document or letter had been unopened, and to verify the sender’s identity. This one is the common seal of the Chapter-Melrose. Look closely and you’ll see it features a picture of the Virgin and Child with three men who could be Magi. The contents of the document are unknown as only the remaining fragment is the one you can see attached to the bottom. You can still see the traces of mysterious ink script.
