Whistles for Carson Hall

Dear 3D Printing Club, I am writing to tell you about a very special little boy and an opportunity that we may have to help support his family. Carson Hall is 5 years old and he lives with his mother, father, and little brother in Hutchinson, KS. One year ago, Carson was diagnosed with a diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG) brain tumor, a fatal pediatric form of cancer. A child diagnosed with DIPG today faces the same prognosis as a child diagnosed 40 years ago. There is still no effective treatment and no chance of survival. Only 10% of children with DIPG survive for 2 years following their diagnosis, and less than 1% survive for 5 years. The median survival time is 9 months from diagnosis, but Carson has already survived a whole year and his family is making the most of their time with him. I came to know Carson and his family 5 years ago when his mom and dad owned and operated food booths next to our face painting booth at the Kansas State Fair. They are a very hard working family. I remember his mom being pregnant with him and then later pregnant with their second son. Last year we found out the terrible news of Carson’s diagnosis. All the vendors at the fair became aware and gave Carson the opportunity to make as many memories as possible. Understandably so, Carson’s family has a goal to make the most of his time on Earth, no matter what the cost. They have never asked for a dime but when I followed Carson’s story on Facebook via the page “Carson’s Crusaders”, I knew that I wanted to do whatever I could to help. My husband got a 3D printer in March and he started making toys, including whistles. This is where I got the idea for the project. My hope is that I may receive some help from an experienced 3D printer programmer to write a program for a whistle that would have Carson’s initials (CH) on it, along with a loop so that a lanyard may be attached. Once a pattern has been made, I was hoping that the members of the 3D Printing Club would be willing to make whistles and donate them to the cause by September 2nd, 2017. The plan would be to sell them at the Kansas State Fair and charge $5 a piece with all proceeds going to the family. When I asked Carson’s mom if I could create this fundraiser she said, “I am touched and you have my blessing if you decide to organize that.” I also called the head of the Kansas State Fair and she was excited about the idea.
