This valley oak is hundreds of years old and partially hollow due to the work of termites and white rot that is comensal iwth oaks. Tubular trunks are lighter and stronger than solid ones and can grow to over a hundred feet. Squirrels and birds make good use of the hollows and trees eventually break usually due to drought stresses. The white rot is always present but has the last word and is not the cause of the ultimate demise. The unidentified fungus has some fruiting shelf like bodies with spore bearing filaments.
