Revisit this page for updates on a DIY wind turbine design! I'm experimenting with information found online and will continue making improvements through trial and error. Your comments are welcome for suggestions on how to enhance the design. This page was republished due to a previous version's bug. Solidworks files are available for anyone who wants to modify the design further. Here are some known issues that need improvement: - A pole mount with rotation connection for wiring is missing. - Make the design waterproof. - The alternator housing needs a mount for a ball bearing closer to the turbine. - No design for a tail wing to follow the wind's direction. - Housing parts are prone to warping during printing. - Some tight fits require adjustment. - The blades have no aerodynamic calculation behind their design. - A nose cone is missing for the turbine. - The housing doesn't allow for nuts to be tightened inside. Updates and changes include: - Switching from a 1-phase to a 3-phase design with 12 magnets and 9 coils (stratorcoils and frame, rotors both, and middle distance updated). - Increasing magnet thickness from 3mm to 10mm (rotors updated). - Thickening the stratorframe by 3mm for better space to roll coils. - Moving coils slightly towards the center for more room for copper (coils and rotors updated). - Strengthening the walls holding magnets from 0.4 to 0.6 (rotors updated). - Reducing the outer diameter of rotors to save mass (rotors updated). Previous updates include: - Distance rings for bearings (2014-03-29) - Front support added for anti-warping (2014-03-23) - Parts for pole mounting (2014-03-20) - Baseplate adjustments for better fitting and anti-warping (2014-03-18) - Coil and rotor redesigns (2014-03-16, 2014-03-14) - Front support addition with a bearing close to the blade hub (2014-03-13) Remember that all parts should be obtainable or printable using tools found at home.
