Ivory plaque depicting a winged sphinx Phoenician, 9th-8th century BC. Found at Fort Shalmaneser, Nimrud (ancient Kalhu}, northern Iraq. Ivory panel in openwork shows a male, human-headed sphinx walking amongst flowering plants; wears the double crown of Upper and Lower Egypt, and hanging from the chest is an apron with a projecting uraeus; probably made by Phoenician craftsmen.
