Wood Sand Glass Base Fragment (VCU_3D_4930)

This wooden sand glass base fragment was part of a device that used sand to track the passage of time. It was recovered from the shipwrecked vessel, Betsy, located in the York River, off the coast of Yorktown, Virginia. The remains of Betsy were in especially good condition, providing the opportunity to gather data on eighteenth-century ship construction and furishings (Broadwater 1992:39). It was part of a fleet of vessels scuttled by the British in 1781.
