Wood Sand Glass Base Fragment (VCU_3D_4930)

sketchfab

This wooden sand glass base fragment was part of a device that used sand to track the passage of time. It was recovered from the shipwrecked vessel, Betsy, located in the York River, off the coast of Yorktown, Virginia. The remains of Betsy were in especially good condition, providing the opportunity to gather data on eighteenth-century ship construction and furishings (Broadwater 1992:39). It was part of a fleet of vessels scuttled by the British in 1781. See John Broadwater 1992 Shipwreck in a Swimming Pool: An Assessment of the Methodology and Technology Utilized on the Yorktown Shipwreck Archaeological Project. Historical Archaeology 26(4):26-46. This artifact was 3-D scanned with a NextEngine Desktop 3-D scanner at the archaeological curation facility of the Virginia Department of Historic Resources in Richmond, Virginia.
