Wreck Fpl. 63 - Ship Barrier, Bay of Greifswald

In the summer of 2017 the Cultural Heritage Agency of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern excavated, recorded and removed two shipwrecks in the Bay of Greifswald in Northern Germany, prior to the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. This 3D model shows the scans of the various excavation phases of wreck Fpl. 63 (see wreck Fpl. 64). This clinker-built trading vessel was seized and deliberately sunk by the Swedish army in the summer of 1715, along with at least 12 other vessels, to form part of a ship barrier at the entrance to the Bay of Greifswald, in order to ward of enemy navies during the Great Northern War. The strategy worked, until a Swedish deserter guided the Danish navy through a secret passage in the barrier (see image); by December 1715 the region was firmly under Danish control. - image source Photogrammetry models.
