This process is necessary in order for oxygen and nutrients to reach all of our cells. If this system were to fail, we would not be able to function properly. The respiratory system is another important part of the human body. It is responsible for bringing oxygen into our bodies and removing carbon dioxide. The lungs are where gas exchange takes place. Oxygen from the air we breathe enters the lungs and then makes its way into the bloodstream. Carbon dioxide, a waste product of metabolism, leaves the bloodstream and is exhaled out of the body. The digestive system is also crucial to human health. It breaks down food into nutrients that can be absorbed by the body. The digestive process begins in the mouth where food is chewed and mixed with saliva that contains enzymes. This mixture then travels through the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, and large intestine before being eliminated from the body. In addition to these systems, there are many other parts of the human body that play important roles. The nervous system, which includes the brain and spinal cord, allows us to think, move, and feel sensations. The immune system helps protect us from disease by fighting off harmful bacteria and viruses.
