해금은 유라시아 대륙에 퍼져 있는 호궁(胡弓)류 악기가 고려시대에 우리나라에 들어와 향악기화한 것이다. 세로로 건 두 줄 사이에 말총 활을 넣어 연주하는 찰현(擦絃, 줄비빔)악기이다. 정악과 민속악 등 전통음악 전 분야와 창작 및 퓨전국악에 두루 사용된다. 친척악기로 중국의 얼후(二胡), 일본의 고큐(胡弓), 몽골의 모린호르(馬頭琴마두금, Morin khuur) 등이 있다.
